Some support schemes on Lightning Reach ask for a referral from a support worker or organisation before you can apply.

Don’t worry if you don’t already have a support worker – many people don’t, and there are easy ways to find someone who can help. This guide will show you where to start.

What’s a support worker or referrer?

A support worker (sometimes called a referrer) is someone who can confirm your situation and help you access the right kind of support.

They might be a social worker, housing officer, benefits advisor, healthcare professional, or someone from a local charity or community organisation.

You don’t need to have ongoing support from them – some organisations can help just by confirming your details for an application.

Having a referrer can make the process smoother and, for some schemes, it’s a required step before you can apply.

Where to find one? Start with people you already know

If you’re already getting help from a social worker, health visitor, housing officer, or local charity, ask if they can refer you for support. .

If you’re unsure how to ask, you could say:

“I found a support scheme, but it says I need a referral – is that something you can help with?”

Contact community services

Your local Citizens Advice or Age UK branch can often help you find someone to act as your referrer.
You can also get support from
 National Energy Action.

Reach out to your local council or housing association
Local councils and housing associations often have teams that can help with applications or referrals.
Many councils also have community hubs or welfare teams that can connect you to local organisations who make referrals.

You can find your local council’s contact details using the gov.uk council finder.

Ask your healthcare provider
If you’re under medical care, your GP or another healthcare professional may be able to connect you with a social worker or community link worker.
