South Tyneside Council offers financial support if you’re struggling with money, housing costs or setting up a home.

Below is an overview of the support available.

Local Assistance Fund

You may be able to get help if you are facing a financial crisis. This could be because of:

  • A sudden emergency

  • Ongoing hardship

  • Rising living costs

  • Unexpected expenses

They can support with:

  • Moving into a new home

  • Removal costs (if moving within South Tyneside or into the borough)

  • Replacing essential items that have broken

The aim is to help you stay safe and stable during difficult times.

Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP)

If you receive Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit but it doesn’t cover your full rent, you may be able to apply for a Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP).

These payments are discretionary and assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Please note: A Discretionary Housing Payment cannot be awarded if your rent shortfall is due to service charges such as:

  • Water rates
  • Support charges
  • Heating
  • Lighting
  • Rent arrears

If you’re unsure whether you’re eligible, you can contact South Tyneside Council directly by phone 0300 123 6633 or by email welfaresupport@southtyneside.gov.uk
